wanted to know how much free play i should expect to find in the lifters.Was going to change timing chain (1.9L SOHC) and found 1/4 inch of movement in them.I think the motors had it

If you have that on the lifters I wouldn't worry about all the lifters aren't going to go bad at once.I have replaced very few of the lifters on those cars.
