the battery light came on while I was driving and it would still drive but it hard to turn the wheel

Check to make sure the belts are tight and still on.

That is what is causing the problem. Is it broken or did it come lose?

Inspect the belt. Chances are it stretched and needs replaced. I have to ask you a question... Is there only one belt on the vehicle? If that is the case, there is a belt tensionier that keeps it tight. Check to make sure it is not broken or damaged. As far as the belt, if the tensionier is good, I would replace the belt with a new one. I have done them on these cars and it is tight to work on. I wouldn't want to see you use the old one and it come off again.

I took it to the shop and the said it was the water pump and it would be $820 is that a rip off?
