belt tensioner came off while driving. belt also came off, but i was able to save them but i cannot find out where replace belt tensioner.

We have replaced all of the pulleys, and the tensioner. It works for several months and then it'll break. once it breaks it seems to happen 3 or 4 times in a row. Maybe twice a day. It seems like it is always the outer edge of the belt that gets frayed or strips come off of the belt on that side. We do not know what else to do. There has to be something we are overlooking. Several mechanics have worked on the van.

something is broken or out of alignment. Concentrate on the outer edge of the pulleys. I had the same problem it's not easy to find.
Mine was a broken idler pulley where it mounted to the block. It would let the belt feed on to the next pulley properly. Anything you haven't replaced take it off and examine it.

I recently replaced the serpentine belt and tensioner on a '99 Pontiac Montana. The belt had signs of wear and after replacing the belt the tensioner broke. I have had the new belt on for two weeks and it started squealing. The squeal would go away after running for a few minutes, but would come back after shutting the car off. I checked the belt and noticed that the belt material appears to be degrading. The back side of the belt feels gummy. I found the power steering resevoir to be empty. Is it possible for the power steering fluid to have caused the belt to deteriorate? I feel like The power steering pump needs replaced but I don't want to just throw parts at this.

If you have power steering fluid leaking onto the belt, that will certainly ruin it. You need to determine exactly what is leaking and repair it, then replace the belt and wash all the pulleys.
