We recently replaced the rear shocks in an 01 Bonneville and since then are having a "clunking" noise at low speeds when hitting bumps. It sounds like the trunk is not closed and bangs when driving over a bump. The shocks are working well though.

Make sure the mount bushings are properly compressed.

How do you check if the mount bushings are properly compressed?

The bushings appear to be okay. We replaced the left shock again and also replaced the shock mount, but the noise continues. Any further ideas of the cause of the noise? Again, the noise is most noticeable at slow speeds, when hitting small bumps or cracks, but not every time.
