2001 Oldsmobile Intrigue engine noise

My engine makes a clanking sound but it isn't consist ant. Also there is no effect on the tach as it runs at a even level. The vehicle broke down while my son was driving. The oil was low but he insists there were no problems or noise prior to the break down. I replace the cam and crank sensors and the engine started but has the noise. Power steering line has been broken for some time as well and without fluid.
Thoughts and recommendations on what could be the issues or where to check
