license plate light out, changed left one to see if worked and didnt... dont know what to do, driving cross country...

Use a test light to check for power. Those lights are tied into the same wire that light the tail lights and side marker lights so if they work, there would be a break in the wiring somewhere in the back or the socket itself is no good.
