Rough idle and running.

On cold start van runs good. When it warms up it has develops a rough idle, sputters and dies after some time. I've changed plugs, wires, cap and rotor (the van needed it regardless). I've checked mass air flow sensor and it checks out fine. I've thought about fuel pump but have not checked pressure yet. Need to get tee to put in fuel line to do so. Only reason I'm Leary on it not being the fuel pump is that I can still get the rpms over 4000 even with the sputtering. When I ran codes it had an p0600 code and a p0300 code with no check engine light. After I did tune up I deleted codes and they have not returned and no check engine light is on. Kinda at a loss at the moment so any help would be appreciated. Thank you, Bill.

check fuel pressure with a gauge auto parts rent it and check for a vacuum leak. it may be low fuel pressure making engine lean causing problem.

I just got done doing that and at idle it holds about 36-38 psi and when you step on the gas it goes up to 40-42 psi. Not positive but I think that is within specs.

with key on and engine not running should be 37-43psi engine running shold be 30-38 psi p0600 means that there is a communication problem with the pcm to tcm. 0300 is random misfire which is why it runs rough. Have a pro scan it so he can do some further tests on scanner which the cheaper ones can't do. it may be another sensor bad in engine. If you can't find a vacuum leak or air leak prior to engine then that is your best bet as these random misfires are extremely hard to find.

So fuel pressure is good. I've sprayed carb cleaner around the intake looking for leaks and nothing. I've checked hoses for vacuum leaks and nothing. You think it's possible that it may be just bad gas?? People have also said they have experienced this same problem and it turned out to be the distributer.

i just had a 2001 villager in the shop. good fuel pressure . no codes except ran rich. turned out the air filter was torn on the bottom and the screen for the maf sensor was mostly clogged. after cleaning ran great.

check engine light came on for knock sensor.replace
knock sensor and intake manifold gaskets,after everything was done when starting car notes car idles rough idle goes up and down and stalls check
for faults only found fault for transmission related none related to engine.notes a hissing sound like a vacuume leak check all line in front and back o.k.?

Mercury Villager has 128000 miles. I have had distributor replaced, spark plugs replaced (expensive ones), throttle body cleaned, vacum leak sealed (reconnected), air filter replaced. When I am at a stop and engine is running, it has a rough idle, almost like a "shudder". It does not act like it is going to die or cut-off. When I put the gear in park it does not do this. Shifts gears fine (transmission is smooth), very good gas mileage. Only the slightest of hesitation when pressing on the gas from a stopped position.

start with a compression test. you have done the plugs, what about the wires??. make sure there is no other vacuum leaks. beyond that, you may need help from a shop to track it down.

My van is idling very rough and wont go above 2 rpms. I have tried heet, fuel injector cleaner, looked at cap and rotar and they were fine. I tried to put in 5 gal more gas incase it was bad gas. I don't know what else to try. Any suggestions? 99 mercury villager

97 mercury villager van 3.0 motor I did a complete tune up, changed all filters, pcv valve, checked for vacume leaks, rechecked all the fireing orderthe engine runs rough at idle but smoothes out when you start driving, no engine codes are present.

You may have an injector not providing enough fuel at idle. Try some Techron fuel system cleaner by Chevron. This will clean injectors and valves.

The car idles rough and stalls when you start it up cold or hot. just changed the air filter on it.check engine light is on but don't have an OBD1 scanner. any suggestions?

check it for tune up and vacuum leaks Trouble codes are retrieved from EEC system through MIL (CHECK ENGINE light) located on instrument panel. MIL is used with Diagnostic Test Connector (DTC). See Fig. 2 . To retrieve codes, use the following procedure: Turn ignition key to ON position. Disconnect the diagnostic connector, located near starter,in engine compartment.Fig. 2 . Jumper between Blue/White and Grey/Blue terminals as indicated in illustration, and wait 2 seconds. Remove jumper wire and reconnect diagnostic connector. Record DTC, MIL flashes. READING CODES All trouble codes are 2-digit numbers. PCM outputs codes one digit at a time. These codes indicate current faults in system and should be serviced in order of appearance. Scan tester, if used, will count pulses and display them as a digital code. If using MIL, trouble codes are displayed as light pulses from CHECK ENGINE light. When using MIL, pay attention to length of pauses in order codes correctly. See Fig. 1 . Pass Codes Code 55 indicates system passes that portion of test. If Code 55 is not retrieved, proceed to CIRCUIT TEST corresponding with trouble code that is output. CLEARING CODES To clear codes from PCM memory when using MIL (CHECK ENGINE light), disconnect jumper wire and reconnect harness connectors. If using scan tester, follow tool manufacturer's instructions. If problem has not been corrected or fault is still present, code will immediately be reset in PCM memory.

An OBDII reader will not work
need an older scanner

check with local repair shops most they still have it and should be able to get the codes for you

just put new plugs and cap and rotors on it .Still stalls at idle and seems to be starving for gas when under a load. changed a vacuum hose that was cracked. Still stalls. Any other suggestions?

check for fuel pressure
replace fuel filter too



stalling issue check MAF sensor
that also may be a cause of a lack of performance under load too
