transmission stuck in reverse

i have a mazda tribute 2001 and the car is stuck in reverse. the shifter is stuck and doesnt allow me to move into park nor neutral. the car doesnt turn over.

battery is good the car lights turn on and stay on
the steering wheel still allows me to turn
car is in reverse but shifter will not budge
the key hole still allows me to turn but car wont turn over

have a helper with this. have them shift the car or try to. look on trans to see if trans cable is moving or something stuck in shifter. block the wheels so it won't go any where, disconnect shifter from trans and see if it will move the trans lever by hand. then you'll have to see if your shift interlock is messed up causing this or a broken cable.
