Hi, a friend changed brake pads on my car today and since then when starting the car or stopping at lights etc the car will rev to about 3000 before dropping back down to normal after awhile. I have experienced this in the past but not as bad and it stopped by itself as soon as I turn the ac off. The ac is not on and the engine light has come on (which sometimes happens as well and just turns itself off after awhile).

Many thanks

replacing brakes pads had no effect on this issue. I would have it checked for vacuum leaks. It is the most common issue for this type of problem

The "check engine" light is an indicator for a system that monitors many electronic functions in the system, also called the "malfunction indicator lamp" (MIL). It can come on for any of hundreds of different causes from any of the systems that the computer monitors. Some are very important and can lead to further component or engine damage and some are emissions related not as serious but still a problem and need to be repaired.

Your first step is to have the computer scanned to retrieve the trouble codes that were set when the check engine light came on. Those codes will give you specific information about what the computer saw and will get you pointed in the right direction to find your problem. With a 1996 or newer and some 95 cars and you have an AutoZone or Advanced auto parts in your area, they will read them for free. Once you have these code numbers, we can be a lot more specific about what your problem may be.

Thanks :) I'm in Australia so I'm not sure if we have places that read it for free but ill look into it. Is it bad for me to drive it around locally in the meantime (it's the weekend here at the moment)?

I can't tell you if it's going to be harmful to drive because at this point you don't even know what the issue yet. I would try not to drive it too much until you get a better picture of what is going on.
