How can I tell the shocks need to be replaced on a 2001 Honda CR-V?

That is something that has many degrees and different opinions. The old standard test is to grab the bumper and each corner of the car and start jouncing it up and down as hard as you can. When you let go, the car should stop within one bounce. You should also visually inspect them for any moisture indicating a leak or rotted rubber bushings.
