Honda Crv AWD whine

I have a 2001 CRV AWD, automatic 4 speed. When i reach appox 20 mph I get a whinning noise thats a little loud. I can bring the car up to road speed 55-60, place in neatural and the car will whine untill it stops. Start off again and it want start whinning untill around 20 mph again. Cut the wheels left or righ with no difference. Transmission shifts and operats as it should. Shop wants to break it down for big bucks, say its a bearring. Also told me that transfer case was integrated which is WRONG. Any ideas ??? Thanks

Noises are never easy to diagnose in cyber space.
Transfer case is plugged into transmission below the left axle shaft.

Is the noise consistent?
Does noise level/pitch or intensity changes with vehicle speed?
Does it changes with upshifting?
Where is noise coming from, front or rear of vehicle?

Try disconnectiong and removing the propeller shaft and drive in 2 wheel mode to see if noise is still there.

I will remove shaft tomorrow and drive. When noise starts its consistant, doesn't very alot in pitch. Thats what has me puzzled.Starts at 20 mph give or take a couple mph and continues untill the wheels stop turning. I have placed it in neatural at 50 mph and let it coast to a stop with the noise continuing until the wheels stop turning. When I place the vehicle in neautral like that the whine does taper down more

PS appears to come from right front underside of vehicle.

If vehicle speed makes a difference, it could be a bad wheel bearing.

If it is a transmission problem, the noise would normally change with gear up or down shifting and slight acceleration would make it more pronounced.

It could also be due to a dry axle shaft dust seal.

Thanks for the help on this issue. Finally got around to getting the car in the air and checking it out. For the two transmission shops that wanted to charge me 1600 - 1800 dollars because the transmission has to be rebuilt.........you are thieves. Now, the problem is in the all wheel drive transfer unit. Bearring roar. Drop the drive line, pull the exhaust down, pull four bolts and its off.Used replacement part 125.00 - 400.00 James
