rough idle

i have a 2001 ford escape 4 cyl. 2.0
manual transmission
tach idles steady at 750 but engine rough idle and at times idle reaches 1000 rpm it takes awhile for it to come down

no CEL? common things are IAC valve or vacuum leak. dirty EGR can leak too.

ford calls the IAC a ICV. either means idle control valve.
