shifter cable replacement?

When our gear shifter quit working my husband tore into it and found the cables coming from the shifter needed replaced. My brother-in-law says we need to replace additional parts with the cables or the clutch will blow within 100 miles. Can we replace just the cables or is there more that needs done?

The clutch on this vehicle is hydraulic, so the cable have nothing to do with the clutch. As far as the shift cables,

As far as the shift linkage, here are the directions for replacing them. The attached pictures correlate with the directions. However, I'm a bit confused. There are no cables related to the shifter. The shifter in the vehicle is attached to linkage rods. Is that what you were referring to?

Gearshift Linkage
Removal and Installation
1. Raise and support the vehicle.

2. Remove the gearshift linkage to the transaxle bolt and nut.

3. Remove the gearshift linkage.
1. Remove the bolt and nut.
2. Remove the gearshift linkage.
4. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
