tapping

2001 DODGE STRATUS

My 2 door dodge stratus coupe, 2001 model, is tapping. Of course it sounds like a lifter,but its not. Someone told me it could be the waterpump, is this possible?

It could be a few things. The first thing I would try would be to remove the accessory belt to see if the noise goes away. If it does, check all accessory driven components (alt, PS pump, AC...)

NOTE: Only run the engine a few seconds with the belt off to make sure the noise is gone. Runnng it too long can cause overheating or other damage.
