you need a leak down test in the cylinders to verify. from your description, it sounds like you have issues.

Can you go over this guide it can help us fix it

can you tow it to a shop?? most likely you have a blown head gasket especially when there is no heat.

My car overheats when idle for a while but returns to normal temperature when I am driving. The radiator, hoses, and thermostat were all changed within the past 3 weeks. The car went into the red about a month ago, which prompted me to change the thermostat. Then the radiator began to leak, so I changed it as well as the hoses.

The fans work perfectly. I checked them this morning when the temp gauge began to rise.

So both upper and lower radiator hoses are getting really hot? When the fan comes on is there a lot of air being pulled thru the radiator? If you were to feel.with your hand iam talking? What is the actual temp the radiator fan is coming on at?

Both are getting really hot. I haven't checked the actual temperature, but I will later today and let you know what I find out.

My dodge stratus 2001 is overheating recently. About a month ago it overheated for the first time and we realized it was completely out of coolant. We didn't find it odd seeing we hadn't replaced the coolant in years but in little less than a month it is completely out of coolant again and overheating once again. We have checked for leaks. The radiator also seems to not have any coolant in it at the moment so the coolant isn't circulating through the system. What is the problem?

Get the coolant system pressure tested to find the source of the leak, the coolant is going somewhere, If it is overheating and boiling the coolant out, check and test coolant fans, thermostat, and get a chemical test done to check for combustion gases in the coolant(head gasket/ head problem)

My car started overheating, smoke under hood. There was some antifreeze on the ground once the car was parked and shut off for a while even though the overflow container has plenty of antifreeze in it. Now the next day when we tried to start it, it makes a whirring sound. The belts are turning, so I think the motor didn't seize. Maybe it's not getting fuel? Could the starter have fried because of overheating?
Thank you for your response.

Does the starter sound like it's spinning too fast? Also, how hot did it get (in the red zone of the gauge) and how long did you run it that way? Finally, can you tell aprox where the coolant was leaking from?

First my heater quit working and then the car started overheating and dumping out all of its coolant. How do I replace the thermostat and where is it?

The thermostat is inside the thermostat housing. The thermostat housing is located where the radiator cap is at. You will see two screws that hold the housing in place. Unscrew it and lift the housing and you shall see the thermostat right there.

NOTE: Do not perform this when the car is hot. Wait at least 3 hours if the car has been used. Just a very small amount of radiator coolant may come out.

The car is in excellent shape. May be feeling a slight loss of power but it is time for new plugs and wires etc. This is my dilemma. Temperature gauge rises to about three quarters but if i run either the heat or air conditioner(with it set on the dash blower) the temperature gauge will drop to between a quarter and halway up the gauge. Is this a thermostat problem? No water leaking anywhere and I have been checking it every three days since this started happening. Checked all hoses--no leaks. Oh and this only happens while actually driving. With the vehicle idling(I checked it for about 30 minutes yesterday) the temp gauge never goes up. Fan kicks on and then will kick off which I am assuming is normal. Noone can seem to figure out the problem. Can you help?

This can be a thermostat or a water pump with a bad impeler (have had this happen once). If you know anyone with a infered thermomiter then have them check the actual temp just to insure there is not a faulty guage. If it is heating up then start with the thermostat. Let me know what you find and we will go from there.

With the heat on the heater core acts as another radiator helping cool the engine.
With the A/C on, the radiator cooling fan runs continuosly, bypassing any input from the fan temp switch. At an idle, you say the cooling fan will cycle on/off normally BUT, the engine isn't under any load at an idle and apparently the cooling fan can keep up. BUT, AGAIN, if your radiator is partially plugged, cruising down the road, the cooling fan and the "moving air rush" may not be enough to keep the engine cool. I would have the radiator checked out. With 170K miles, it could well be partially plugged. This could cause the problem you described.

Our car has just developed a leak in the cooling system, and my wife ran it hot. The engine locked up, and now it will turn over, but it is slow. What can I do, or is it a 2000 lb paper weight now?

Pull plugs crank coolant come out? Worst case haedgasket failure and piston rings shot and possible bearing damage if coolant got into oil. So paper weight or boat anchor is good analogy.
