I had a sudden water pump failure on my Dakota and unfortunately was unable to save the engine. I am in the process of trying to locate another 4.7L V8. I have a friend that has a 318 CID V8 but I don't know if that can be installed in my Dakota without major other changes especially in the electronics.

I don't recommend it. Sensors, vacuum harnesses, wiring harnesses, computers... will all need to be changed or modified. Then, chances are the correct sensors that the computer will recognize won't fit into the new engine or there won't be a place for them.

I STRONGLY recommend finding the same year, make, and model vehicle with the 4.7 and getting a direct fit engine. Otherwise, you may (most likely will) end up with problems. ]If you use something different and get it to run, 99 percent of the time there will be a problem that will cause the check engine light to come on and the vehicle won't pass emissions inspection.
