Good Afternoon,

My Husband replaced the transmission in my 2001 Chevy Suburban, someone told me that the computer needed to be reset to "learn" that the new transmission was in place. My Husband's scan tool will no longer read my truck and a friend brought over his $3,000 scanner and it wouldn't read my truck either.

My question is, how can we reset the computer here at home. Because of the old transmission going out, now the new transmission will not go into third (that's what happened to the original transmission), so I can't drive it to a shop and honestly, we can't afford to have a shop work on it anyway.

I think resetting/restarting the computer would be the first step, and then, at least, the scan tool would work and then maybe the computer would learn that the broken transmission has been removed and a new transmission has been put in.

Did you reuse the shift solenoids from the old transmission on the "new" transmission?
If so, this could be the problem: a bad thrid gear shift solenoid.

The shift solenoids were replaced too.

Since the scanner you used could not communicate wit the trucks' computer, there might be a lack of power o the Data Link Connector (DLC), that's the place where you connect the scanner.
Check you CIGAR fuse (15A). This fuse must be is good condition in order for the DLC to get power and communicate with a scanner (and of course for you cigarette lighter to work).

Was the transmission you put in new or used?

This kind of sounds like the 3-4 clutch is gone out (unlikely on a new transmission, but plausible on a used one).

What color is the transmission fluid now?

Are there any metal shavings in the fluid when you check it?

The cigarette lighter and all "outlets" work fine, so I don't think it's a fuse issue.

The transmission we put in was used, the transmission fluid looks brand new and there are no metal shavings.

At this point, you'll need to have the shift pressures read; mostly likely at a transmission shop. The pressure reading will tell if there are internal problems with the transmission. Call around to find a shop which will inspect the transmission for free and ask if this inspection includes reading the shift pressures.

I'd like to try resetting/restarting the computer first, I've read that disconnecting the battery for 10 minutes should do it. Is this accurate? Is it really that easy?

Disconnecting the battery WILL NOT RESET THE COMPUTER. To reset the computer on the OBDII systems (this is the system you have-most car do), you have to have a scanner to erase the codes-this"resets" the computer.

Use a voltmeter to check for power [12v] at the number 16 terminal of the Data Link Connector (under dash on drivers side-where you connect the scanner). Also check for ground at terminals 4 & 5 of the same scanner connector.
