over the past few months my pickup would stall on the road, have trouble starting and used a lot of gas. I replaced the crank position sensor, map sensor, the entire distributor (and set to DTC), installed new spark-plug wires and intake cover but the problem still existed. Finally, it seemed like the distributor was the issue as it had tons of play, the distributor was the last part installed. The next day my truck gave out on me on the road and I did some emergency work and realized i did not correctly set the timing correctly (I set the distributor on the exhaust not compression, it ran ugly and i felt like an idiot). After setting the timing correctly I went to start and cranked the motor, after a few seconds i notice a small amount of smoke. I checked and it smelled electrical coming from around the back of my motor near the distributor. (Again, idiot me) I forgot to plug in the cam position sensor. After I plugged into the CPS i went to crank and immediately i noticed my truck would completely shutoff MID-CRANK.

(Side not) I unplugged the brand new Electronic Control Unit and the motor would crank with no problems, however because I unplugged the ECU it would not start.

How do i find what is keeping my truck from cranking over and how do I fix it?

what ever smoked probably burnt up either the ecu or the sensor etc. have a pro look at it because it may be a bad ecu and a pro will have to install it due to anti theft as it will need to be programmed.
