When you attempt to change mode or range, does the switch acknowledge, and the indicator flash, prior to returning to the position it is stuck in?

By being stuck in 4WD, is it in 4lo? If it is, and it won't shift out of 4lo, are you trying the shift with the transmission in neutral? The next step would be to check for trouble codes, and with your system, that is achieved by grounding pin 13, an orange wire, at the diagnostic connector under the dash.
