what would be the cause of the turn signals to stop working and then start working again at random.

The turn signals will be working and suddenly stop working. When I turn on the emergency flashers the try the turn signal again the beging working.

Sounds like a bad flasher relay you need to check them when there inop.Do you have a mulitmeter to do some testing?
