I have a transmission fluid leak that is causing my 2001 Chevy Blazer (4.3 litre V6) to smoke profusely. I can't trace the source of the leak, any suggestions?

Why can't you find the source? You're going to have to somehow. Look for the highest point you can see oil. In rfeal severe cases you may have to get the engine completely cleaned and add some U/V dye to the oil to help find the leak.

for some reason, I wiped and cleaned off the areas and the drip didn't re-occur...possibly it only leaks when the car is in gear and running?

That is very likely since all the oil drains to the pan when not running There are places that seep when oil is pumped through the engine and there are also pressure points that will leak oil severely under pressure whenever the engine is running.

Wrenchtech, it's not oil...my oil is black, the leaking fluid is reddish (transmission fluid) in color

I'm going to drive it around some tomorrow and see if it's not a result of sitting idle for 2 weeks while I was on break...if not, off to the mechanic

thanks

There are 2 lines that run from the transmission to the radiator that can be leaking or sometimes trans fluid is used in the power steering so that could be leaking also. Just visually look for it with the engine running.

checked the power steering fluid, it's actually power steering fluid and not tranny fluid (did that initially)...I think it could be one of those two lines that run from the transmission to the radiator..still going after it!

thanks mucho for the assist
