no overdrive?

It sounds like the overdrive shift solenoid is not working here is the location in the diagrams below so you can change it out. Check out the diagrams (Below). Please let us know what happens.

My parents bought me this car and we have had more problems than some. I am asking for your help because at this point we don't know what else to do. To make a very long story short, we have replaced the motor, the sensors and many other parts. However, there is still another problem. When you are driving up a steep hill, the car wants to go to chug because it does not want to shift down out of overdrive in these steep hills. The fluid and filter have both been changed in the transmission. The car shifts into overdrive at 45 mph on a level surface which seems to be a low speed for this to happen. On the level pavement and the car is in overdrive, you can push the accelorator all the way down and it will not shift down into a lower gear (4 gear) until it hits passing gear. If i touch the brake, the car will downshift out of overdrive, but shortly after the break is released the car shifts back into overdrive and the problem continues. The check engine light has not come on. The car is at about 1500 rmps and 52/53 mph going up the hill.

one question first, when your driving it and you step down on the accelerator does it down shift to a lower gear to pass someone or does it stay in od?

The car stays in overdrive until the accerator is nearly to the floor when it shifts into passing gear

what codes are stored in the computer?

None. The computer came up with nothing. No codes.

It is normal for the torque converter to lock up at 45 mph. You could have a tcc pwm solenoid that is going out and causing the tcc not to release. A tcc valve binding in the valve body bore will also cause this.

We will relay this information to the independant transmission shop mechanic. He has been doing this for 40+ years and this information will hopefully help narrow down the problem.

I hope that this works. My parents are the ones who have the money in this car and I only had it for about a month and a half before hydrolocking the engine. We took it to people we thought we could trust, but they ended up costing us 1300 dollars by "patching" the problem and a week later the lower part of the engine started to make noise. Mind you, my father had done business with these people for 30+ years!!!! Firstly they should have pulled the motor to see if it was worth trying to fix dont you think? So, needless to say, I went car shopping, found I could not afford anything and my dad pulled the engine (something he has never done on this type of vehicle) and took it to the machine shop to find out that it was junk. So after about 6 months of not having a car, we found a new engine to replace the old one with, so more money spent. My dad has put in the new engine with the slavagable parts that I purchased from other repair. Needless to say, my parents meant well by purchasing me this vehicle to drive back and forth to school (I commute 45 minutes a day) and for a graduation present so I can get to student teaching to graduate college in the fall and there has been nothing but frustration.

So there are three TCC parts in the transmission?

No,there is a tcc solenoid and a tcc pwm solenoid. The diagram shows 3 that are the same part number. This is because the tcc solenoid and the shift solenoids are all the same part number.(tcc solenoid will interchange with a shift solenoid)
