I bought a VW Golf the other day from a very honest reliable lifelong friend. Driving it home something flew off the road and cracked my oil pan. I pulled off the highway and drove the car about your minutes to safety before the oil light came on.
I checked the oil and it was complete empty. Must of leaked out on the road. When being put on the flatbed the fist size chuck of oil pan fell off. The vehicle was towed home at which time I bought and replaced the oil pan. Inspection the pump and what not everything looked in great shape so I proceeded to install the oil pan.
Took the car on the highway later that day and it refused to shift. Rpms would rev to about 6000 and the car didn't want to drive or accelerate. My oil light came on twice. I pulled off the road, checked the oil and new pan and all was well. No leaks except a small puddle of coolant. I had the vehicle towed to a shop. I read somewhere that VW put them self in limp mode to prevent further damage.
I just bought this car and do not know much about the make to do any further work. Can someone shed some light as to what is going on?

Did you fill it to the correct fluid level with the correct fluid?also the transmission could have been damaged from loosing all the fluid or might have had problems before the fluid loss. The fluid loss could have finished the transmission off. What are the exact code numbers not code descriptions you have in the computer?

The oil level was fine. There was no option to check transmission fluid from the dipstick. I have been reading it may be the oil pressure switch or oil pump pump was damaged.
The transmission was fine before all of us. I only really drove the car a total of six hours if that.
I'm stumped. I haven't had the computer checked. Is that something a shop has to do ?

You could have lost a lot fluid with a whole in the transmission pan plus you could have burned clutches and other internal damage

My engine light is not on. Only the oil pressure might came in twice. Never stayed on. The system is a sealed system for tranny fluid the only way to service it is with a lift. I replaced the oil pan, didn't see any damage to the transmission pan. I have it at a shop now but was hoping to save myself lots of money if it was a simple heard of issue.

Sorry I miss read the you said it wouldn't shift after this happened so I some how had it in my head it was the transmission pan.So that really doesn't make much sense why it won't shift. As far as the oil light it could be the sending unit .You would have to measure the oil pressure when the light is coming on.

I agree. It doesn't make much sense. Someone told me that the oil is not getting to the top of the motor which may be why the red light is coming on. I don't know VW well to make any assumption. I am really leaning towards the oil pump. And the car is putting itself into safety "limp" mode. I appreciate the comments as I've boggled my mind and could not find any info online about this issue. The large company puddle was the only fluid leaking. I didn't see a drop of transmission fluid when under it doing the oil pan.

The oil pressure isn't going to effect the shifting .
