Volvo vvt problem Help

I have a 2000 Volvo v40 15 months ago tapping noise from top of engine, was told I needed new vvt soleniod and pulley.
Now there is lots of oil around cam belt have been told it is the vvt. Is this the same thing or is this another part which is inside the engine?
Please help am I going to be charged lots of money for the same thing?

The solenoid and the hub are different. If you had both replaced recently then take it back to see if there is still some warranty on it if you did do the cvvt hub.

Hi JIS001, I had the Pulley, soleniod & cambelt done Oct 09 so they have told me warranty has run out. I dont know if this included the "hub", Is this a different part? Or could they be trying to charge me for a repair to a badly installed first job????

The hub and pulley are different parts and they will be different in price range as well. See the picteres below. Component #3 is the pulley so I do not see why they would replace this for an oil leak since the only purpose for the intake pulley is for the timing belt to turn the intake camshaft. Component #4 is the exhaust camshft pulley but also has the vvt hub. That component uses oil pressure to

I am going to assume that it is the same part? I have attached a picture of what the hub looks like. The exhaust pulley is what has the vvt hub and uses oil pressure to adjust the timing. So the hub could very well be leaking. You could also have the front cam seals leaking as well and that could be your problem but the labor involved is the same as replacing the vvt hub since the exhaust hub and intake pulley needs to come off to replace the seals. You may want to go to another shop and seek a second opinion? If it is the hub leaking then you will need to replace it. A majority of shops only give a 1 year 12,000 mile warranty on there repairs? If you went 15 months without a problem then I do not think the installation was done wrong? The part just failed prematurely in this case.

Hi JIS001, Thanks for the reply, the repairs were originaly done because of a loud tapping noise which did stop once the pulley and soleniod was replaced, but now I have a loud bearing sort of noise and found lots of oil inside the cambelt cover and all around the bottom end by the alternator. The hub is on the opposite side to the drawings, it is in the #3 position, I dont know if this makes a difference, but I will take it to a garage for a second opinion.
