how much time do I have before my engine explodes?

With it being the fuel pump now. My next question is, how much time do I have before my engine explodes? Finances are a little tight right now and my job requires me to have transportation. Is the pick and pull junk yard not the ideal place to pick one up cheap? Or should I be looking into a rental. Ultimately should I be driving it even minimal distance?

I think it will be helpful if you can describe the issue(s) you are facing.

As the engine just doesn't simply explode.

You are mentioning a fuel pump issue. A faulty fuel pump will keep the engine from starting. But it will not damage the engine.
