can i just buy a coil for my distributor

Just make sure its the coil-sound like no spark

pep boy said distributor need replaced, but a couple of people told me that it would be the coil, runs fine for 10 minutes then sputters and putters and the shuts off,

Is the check engine light coming On? Where do you intent to get this distributor?

Get someone to help with experience-when it dies immediately pull the coil wire from the distributor and ground it then crank engine over is the coil wiring sparking as you crank ehe engine over?

the service light is in,not sure where pepboys is getting distributor.

If the coil wire is sparking it means there's nothing wrong with the coil-however double check the rotor and cap button for wear/tear it has to make out of there to transfer the secondary voltages to the sparkplugs-

Replacing the coil should solve the problem but if you are thinking of aftermarket coils, it would be very much cheaper but most probably it is not going to last.

Taking into consideration the labor and parts involved, the cost difference might not be too much if you replace the coil versus a rebuilt distributor.
