Ok that did not help. The alternator is fine. The voltage regulator needs to be replaced. Can ANYONE tell me how to take it off? 2000 Frontier 4cyl, 2.4 liter. Thanks.

The voltage regulator is built into the altenator. I had this issue on a 1999 Frontier and it turned out to be a broken wire in the alternator wiring harness plug. The green wire tells it to charge and the yellow wire is the feedback for the voltage regulator. There is not a replacement plug available so you will have to repair it yourself if that is the issue. If you are lucky the wire will pull out the back of the connector once you remove a few retainers.

That question was nearly a year old so I suspect that he has resolved his problem by now.

Is there a trick to getting the alternator back in place? I had to replace the belt and can't seem to get the top bolt of the alternator lined up properly.

Believe me, I never wanted to do this. It started out as only an oil change and tune-up. I left a wrench on the engine and when I started the truck to check for oil leaks, the wrench fell and broke the alternator belt. Owwww! Help please!

Is it a pivoting bracket you are lining up with the alt? look at the other end of it to see. Anything visibly bent or damaged? Also make sure your bottom alt bolt is loose, so the alt can wiggle a little.

The adjusting screw and tension bolt on the bottom bracket are loose. I can move the alternator. The bolt on the top of the alternator is the one I'm having problems with. I can get the bolt part way into the hole but it won't go all the way. I've tried moving the alternator to several different positions but the bolt won't go all the way in.
