the car starts but it sounds like is going to cut off, when i change the gear to reverse it moves very slowly even if i step on the gas then it will either pick up speed or or it tunrs off.

If the check engine light has come on, have the computer scanned. Most parts stores will do it for free. If it isn't on, check fuel pump pressure. A DIY on our home page will explaine how. Also, check for vacuum leaks on the engine.
