When this unit starts to fail,in particular (when the timing goes off?) Is it then not safer to
find TDC when installing the new one? Or is it still fine just to go by the current notch
position of the old one when stabbing in position?thanks

If you didn't move the synchronizer itself, then there is no need to time. If you moved the synchronizer and not just the cam sensor and didn't mark the position then you have to start from scratch.

Thanks for such a quick answer.I took pics.& marked the sync.(tooth) position on the new one before installing.I guess this would be a second question? Can I adjust timing by loosening the clamp bolt & turning? I should add that instead of oil I used that thicker stuff.Can't think of the name off hand? (Duralube) Since theres no real lubrication.Anyway,for the first 2-3 days the engine would race or idle high untill coming to a complete stop.(Manual trans.) Now it seems normal.My only real worry was that maybe I stabbed the sync.one notch over.,but it seems to run fine now.I might just take it in (scope) to ease my mind anyway?

No, you can't change timing but you can throw all the injectors out of synch.
