why is the lights for the airbags lighting up on the dash

The Air Bag light or SRS light, should come on for 6 seconds and go off. If it does anything else, there is a fault in the Air Bag/SRS system.
The yellow light is a Malfunction Indicator Light, if not labeled otherwise, and indicates the presence of trouble codes that have been thrown by the ECU.
Go to your local large chain auto parts store like, Advance Auto or Auto Zone and they will pull the codes for free.
