Transmission Problem

You need a rebuild or you can buy a used one for less than $400 plus intall, but you will not know what you have. If you can pull it and take it to a place you can get a rebuild deal for $400 plus parts find a guy on CL with references. Take it to a shop with a good warranty and you will be in the 1200-1400 range depending on where you live.

Chances are the reason for the delay is caused by one of two things. Either the seals on the valve body are worn / hard, and allowing fluid to bypass them causing a delay of pressure to the clutch pack or the clutches are worn to a point that there is enough play in them that it takes longer for them to engage (basically longer for the pressure to build and engage them). The same goes with the shifting. If you are experiencing a slipping, most likely the clutch plates are worn and slipping. Truly, it sounds like you need a basic overhaul. If this is the original transmission, you did really well with mileage. One last thing, I am assuming that there are no warning lights coming on since you didn't mention them. If there is a check engine light, have the computer scanned to make sure nothing is wrong electrically with the transmission. There are shift solenoids that can cause a delayed shift, but they won't cause the slipping.

A basic OH is the replacement of soft parts, clutches, bushings, thrust plates, seals, gaskets, o-rings... Basically, it sounds like the transmission is still working the way it was designed to, but because of wear, you are having the slipping and delayed shifts. I would always recommend a new torque converter.

As far as the overhaul, the money is in the labor and not the parts. Parts, with the converter should be around 600.00. Labor will jump that another thousand.

I wish I had a better answer for you, but based on your description, this sounds like the problem.
