2000 Jaguar Vanden Plas VVT issues

P1384 Variable valve timing (VVT) solenoid malfunction "A" bank

The cause for this code condition are VVT solenoid failure, oil flow fault to VVT, VVT camshaft mechanical fault,, ECM fault, with the tapping noise , this is definetly a oil supply problem , the oil pressure should be check , the solenoid if it fails will cause rough idle but no tapping engine noise, Unless the idle is rough that the lifter collapsed. Chang the motor oil and filter use a heavier oil such as 10w 40 weight.If the tapping noise goes away replace the VVT solenoid.

Thanks for your response. I have changed the motor oil from 5w20 to 10w40. The car drives fine except when it goes into the restricted performance mode. I drove it over it over 120 miles and it ran fine with no issues. So if the oil pressure is low should I change the oil pump? I have also changed the vvt solenoid. I was considering changing the camshaft intake or just the vvt actuator.

You need to test oil pressure with a mechanical gauge, get the readings and compare with factory specs, if low, consider anew pump, but be aware that worn engine bearings can also cause low oil pressure.

Im sorry about all the questions but if I was getting low oil pressure would I get an oil light? Would the vvt on both sides of the engine be affected by it? Could I be getting good oil pressure on one side and not the other?

Oil pressure can still be low and the light stay off, we need get all basics checked first, you can do an engine flush as well, but oil pressure must be checked first.
