Automatic - not going into gear??

Every now and then when i am driving around my car will slip from 4th gear down to what seems like 1st gear,i then have to pull over to the side of the road, put it in park then back to drive and it goes fine - it is starting to happen more frequently.
any ideas what this could be?

internal issue with the trans.

is there a check engine light??

yes, this comes on when i start the car, put turns off again (as like the battery light, oil light etc)

oh, i had the alternator changed about 2 months ago

i would go to a trans shop and have them check it for you.
