does a 2000 GMC Jimmy 4.3 have timing gears or a chain?

It has a chain. It's designed just like a 350.

The parts place gave me what appears to be the balance shaft gear and the cam gear, they did no show a chain, any ideas or does the chain run the oil pump in this year model like the 5.3 engine?

It has a timing chain just like the 350 but it also has a balance shaft behind it. https://www.2carpros.com/images/external/131363446.gif
