My son drives the taurus and mentioned recently that there is a loud squeak/moaning sound when he turns the steering wheel. Upon further investigation I determined it only happened when the wheels were turned to the left, and only when going forward. I also checked if the sound happened when the front end was up on jacks and it does not. I checked the power steering fluid and it was a little low so I added some. Sound still persists. Any ideas what might be causing the sound?

it cold be the valve inside the power steering pump or it could be steering rack problem. It may be air in system as;s well. try turning car lock to lock on steering and holding it at the lock position for justa bout 10 seconds or so. see if that helps it. you shold do this 5 times

Since I don't drive the car very often, I'm not sure what you mean about 'car lock'. Can you explain more?

turn it all the way to the right and hold it, then turn all the way to left and hold it. do that 5 times it may be air in the system.

i would suspect ball joints based on the type of vehicle,see if they have grease fittings and if so grease them and see if the noise goes away.
