So did you make sure the new sensor was in the same place as the old one?Does the code set right away? Its worth a try if not your going to have to follow the trouble tree for the code.

either the syncronizer is bad, the piece you bolted the sensor to, or the dpfe is bad. it was known to throw 340 codes in the early models.

@ asemaster6371 I will try that if the alternator swap doesnt work because all the signs point to that it run really bad when the lights are on and the a/c blower is on high. On the pointof the synchronizer how can that go bad when all it is is the distributer shaft? @ Saturn tech9 itran about the same as it does now and I replaced.the sensor three times. Thank you all for the help I will let know what the final result was.

Ok so I did the check with the alternator and the cel did not come on so I turned the a/c all the way on still nothing hooked the alternator up and almost immediately the engine ran rough then the cel came on. So I took the alternator out and up to the parts store had them check it out and it failed, got the new one put in and it runs like a champ. Thanks for all the input but it was the alternator after all.

I attached the procedure for you for replacing the synchronizer assembly. Make sure you get the tool when you get the part for installation.
