battery light comes on new battery and alternator installed wont charge

I was driving down the road and my transmission wouldn't shift, the battery light came on and the lights went really dim. It was fine for the next couple of days and finally I lost all power and it quit. We put in a new alternator and a battery. and when I turn on the headlights the battery light still comes on
