why does it throw belt

i have a 2000 grand caravan with a 3.3 liter. i got it used some one replaced the alternator. ever since it throws the belt. i noticed the alternator sets back a little from the tensioner pulley. i took it in ,but it is exactly like the only one recomended. why does it throw the belt
