i was driving to work and the battery charge fauly come up on the dash and the the lights and radio cut off then i drove a bit more then my car just cut out and then tried starting it again and it would not start then i left it 4hours and then it strated and drove for about 100 yards and just cut out again

Have the charging system tested after you charge the battery for an hour at a slow rate. The most likely suspect is the generator.
