Heat not working

So,i don't know if it will "fix" it like i did mine. But i have the same car and my heater was stuck on cold. I popped out the little black frame around the radio/temp. control. Pulled out the radio(don't worry it will be okay) and on the right hand side all the way back the cable connection between the arm and regulator had broken. Just mess with the little "arm with teeth" until you find the right temp.

The car heater was working fine and it suddenly was no longer heating; got home and turned off car, heard bubbling; thermostat did not register that it was over heating.

This is a bad sign, when this whens it is becasue the heater is the highest point in the cooling system and when the engine has a blown head gasket it will fill the core with air stopping the heater from working and that is what you are hearing when the engine stopped.

I have a 2000 Cirrus with 53000 miles, automatic transmission, and only normal maintenance done on it. I turned the heater on and the air does not get hot. My local mechanic change the theromstat and flushed the system, but it still did not work. He said that there is a defective valve that open a door to change the air temperature. He spoke with the local dealer and they say it is not a defect, but wants to charge me $500.00 to change the syatem out.
I do not trust the dealer and my mechanic says it is out of his capabilities.
What do you suggest?

Check in your area for another local shop that is capable. You can ask your mechanic for a reference. It sounds more like a unpleasant job than one that is out of his capabilities.

we changed the thermostat.. didn't help. Now I have been told it's the alternator and water pump...was told that the engine might have to be taken out to fix it.

first your alternator has nothing to do with your heater or coolant system. to replace your water pump does not require to remove the engine. first thing to do is start from the beginning. does the engine work properly is it over heating or is it just the heater not working. it engine is not over heating then it is a control problem with your heater. could be a stuck valve or in your control panel. if your car is overheating then could be lots of things. check to see if water is circulating by looking at the water through your radiator cap. make sure engine is cooled before removing cap. crank engine after you remove cap and wait till it heats up. when it does you should see water moving or pushing up out of top. if you see water coming out or moving then water pump may be good. is water brown in color. that can be a sign of water pump failure. good luck in your search or find a good mechanic. seems whoever told you your last info needs some more schooling

It is possible that the flap door the suppose to expose the heater core (when you select heat) is not opening.
