Ok so normally my truck runs good but for some reason when its hot and I drive it for long periods it begins to idle high. When it idles high it starts at 1000 rpm then goes up to 2 or 3. But the funny thing is when it idles this way the gears wont change so I have to take my foot off the gas in order for the gears to change like a stick shift. Then when I get to my destination I put it in park and then it idles like I have my foot on the gas. Sometimes I feel like I have to put more pressure on the breaks because I feel like it wont stop. I really love this truck but I'm getting frustrated because no one can tell me what to do. My mechanic said he doesn't know what could cause that unless it does it for him. But I'm not taking it to the mechanic every time this happens because once I get it there I am sure it wont do it. Please help me thanks

Has the check engine light come on? If so, has anyone scanned the computer for trouble codes?

No check engine light and my husband checked it for codes and it doesn't show anything. Can it still give a code even if it isn't having the problem

No, if the problem isn't happening, it won't store any codes. However, it should while it's happening and the check engine light should come on. The computer should store the code until it is deleted with a scanner.

You have me a little confused. Does this only happen at an idle? If so, what do you mean you have to shift it like a standard?

Sorry I don't mean to confuse you but yes it only happens when it is idling high. When I say that I have to shift im just saying that when it idles high it won't shift gears like it should automatically. When you press the gas it idles high so in order for the gears to change I take my foot off the pedal and then it will change.

Without a trouble code, it is difficult and becomes a guessing game. The idle itself is maintained by an item called the idle air control valve (IAC). That could cause an idle issue. However, it wouldn't cause the transmission issue. The first thing I would check in this case is the throttle position sensor (TPS). If the computer thinks your foot is heavy on the throttle, it could cause shifting issues.

As far as the transmission issue I hadn't had a problem with it since he changed the IAC. .but I do have to take it to get the front axle seal done.but as far as that my husband can do the rest..he just won't mess around with anything dealing with the transmission. .
