Is the check engine light on? If it is, do you know the code?

Have you checked the fuel pressure?

The backfiring may be from running lean or it may be a valve train issue. I would also do a compression test.

Thanks for the recommendations, but I have figured out the issue; I had a dirty mass air sensor.
