Hi, My sister has a 1999 S40 2.0 T with a 2001 motor, we recently had the head skimmed with new valves and new pistons, set the timing as per the manual but car would not start, turned the timing 180 degrees, motor starts and idles but wont rev up, any ideas, please?

This sounds as if the ignition timing is way out, do you have a work shop manual to assist you with re setting the timing?

Hi Mark, thanks for the speedy response, we did use the cars manual the first time to set the timing, car would not start, when we turned the timing 180 degrees the car starts and idles but when you press the accelerator the car dies. I do not have a work shop manual.

Unplug the coil, remove #1 spark plug and place finger over plug hole and with short cranks feel pressure build up, at this point it is approaching TDC #1 look at the timing mark turn engine by hand until timing is at TDC (crank shaft notch at 0deg, look at the distributor with the cap off, set distributor so that the rotor is adjacent to #1 on the cap, make sure plug leads are in correct order, firing should be 153624. this should be close enough to start and run and set timing with a timing light.
