Where is the thermostat located on a 1999 1/2 Jetta

My water light comes on randomly, the temperature needle is rising consistently the last day or two & the car needs no antifreeze! I can only imagine that the thermostat is not working properly but am unable to find it on this car.

you didn't give an engine size but it looks like they are all in the same place

Ow,it is behind the power steering pump & mounting bracket .Not a fun job.

1999 old body or new body style?

If it's a VR6, it's located one the coolant flane on the side of the cylinder head.
