trying to change the water pump in daughters 99 bug, 2.0l engine. Have to partially remove timing belt from camshaft to replace the water pump. Do I have to reset timing if pulleys aren't rotated during removal and then installation? Please help, trying to fix for daughter going to college.

If you are sure that the timing belt is sitting where it was (mark the teeth on the belt and on the sprockets), then no, no need to reset timing.

Timing is actually not adjustable.

If the check engine light comes on AFTER the belt is back on and the engine is running, you are probably out a tooth or two.

This is an interference fit engine (valve damage will occur if camshaft / crankshaft timing is too far out.

By the way, any coolant that you spill onto the timing belt, will decrease the life of the belt.
