You cant a compression tester at auto zone and then remove all you spark plugs. Then screw the compression tester into each cylinder then hold the gas pedal to the floor and crank the engine ten revolutions and record the number.before doing that pull the injector and ignition fuses. Also did you make sure there were no blown fuses?

Why were those bent?I have seen connecting rods for the pistons bend from coolant in the cylinders but not push rods.

To check for a valve not sealing you would use a cylinder leak down tester.Usually if there is bad valve burnt or otherwise it will show up on a compression test. Why did he come to a bad valve? Also how come your brother inlaw didnt help you with the project?I fix my brother inlaws cars for him and he helps me do it.

The push rods were bend because they were put back in the wrong place. The exhaust and intake rods are 1/4" difference in length and cannot be mixed, however they commonly are.
