We have a 1999 Pontiac Grand Am. It was leaking coolant so my dad replaced the water pump. After he fixed it, it started idling rough, but only when it was stopped. When we pressed on the gas it was fine. We were going to take it to him to look at again, after driving it for a couple weeks, and it died after 20 miles or so. There was some also some black smoke. It still had plenty of coolant. My dad came and got it on a trailer and took it the rest of the way. He just got a chance to look at it and said there wasn't any oil or coolant, which it did when it died. It also still turns over so it isn't locked up or anything. So, I guess my question is, Is it completely messed up? What could the issue be? Thanks for any help... it's not the greatest car so we hate to spend a ton of money to fix it. Thanks in advance.

seems your gauges would have warned you of lacking fluids before they got so low it caused a problem? hows the compression readings?
