The timing belt broke. my son tried to crank it up afterwards. Did this do any damage. is it a difficult job replacing the timing belt. i am a 51yr old farmer,i am very mechanically inclined

most likely has bent valves from the breakage, not cranking after the fact.

you will most likely have to remove the head, replace valves, timing belt and all components as well.
