Bought the car used from original owner in 2010. Car has never had the transmission serviced in any way since I've had the car. So last week the car stops shifting gears. I check the transmission fluid and find out that its low...almost empty. I add 4 1/2 quarts of fluid and the car begins shifting with no issues. The next day, I try to drive it and the car shifts into gears but there's a lag after the car is in drive and trying to shift into second gear. I did notice some fluid on my garage floor that I've never noticed in the past. So I take it to my mechanic who comes and tells me there is excess fluid so they are going to drain the excess. The excess is drained and the mechanic comes back and says the car won't go anywhere with the correct amount of fluid in it. So long story short they end up supposedly fixing the pan gasket and when they were about to change the filter the fluid had metal in it. At that point they apparently stopped working on it and said the transmission is shot. However I'm still wondering if the transmission is gone why was the car able to run with excess fluid but not the normal level of fluid?? I've read a few other car blogs with ppl asking about the 626 transmission and each response they've gotten says that the filter should still be changed to see if that makes a difference. And that Metal inthe filter doesn't necessarily mean the transmission itself is shot. So I'm having the car towed back home and I'm wondering what my next step should be....? Should I get a second opinion? Or should I start looking for a new car? Because I refuse to put $2K into a car I paid $1500 cash for.
