I have a 1999 Lincoln Continental with floor shift. Recently, once I've been driving for a few minutes, the display to the left (MPG, Range, Etc.) will start flashing with all sorts of hieroglyphs. The rest of the cluster's lights will flicker as well. Is this a problem with the cluster itself, or with the computer. And is the cluster replaceable?

That sounds like the cluster itself is going bad. And yes, it is replaceable. I am assuming this is a digital dash. If that is incorrect, let me know.

Yes, it is a digital dash. I see that they sell them out of scrapped cars on ebay and they are guaranteed by the seller to work. Are there at least basic outlines on how to replace it, and do you think this would be a good way to go?

Based on your description, I would say yes. As far as replacement, disconnect the battery, remove the trim around the cluster, that will expose the screws that hold it in place. Remove them, remove the cluster, and then the wiring.

So when I start up my Lincoln the gas gauge reads full and within a minute drops down to empty. The onboard Notification Center reads fuel level error. What could be causing this?

Bad connection on the fuel level sending unit. Usually the float arm can be removed and the spring-loaded contact can be bent to make better contact. The clue is the gauge will almost always work properly when the tank is at a certain level such as 1/4 tank or half tank, and it will be pretty consistent. Another potential clue is if the gauge starts working again for a minute or two after going around a corner. That makes the gas move to one side of the tank and the level can change at the sending unit.

DCL or Diagnostic Connector Link is located in the trunk on the left side, behind the carpeting right where the rear left tire wheel well starts up from the trunk floor. There should be an opening in the carpet and the wire is pined to the metal support plate there. Als mounted just below that is a switch for the air ride suspension, as well as the fuel cut off switch.

I would be looking at the wiring from the gauges to the panel lights. It sounds like there might be a problem in this wiring. You can use a voltmeter to check and see if they are getting voltage.

I have been having a problem for the past 5 years with my gauges on my dash. They are all digital readout units. My oil pressure gauge will all of a sudden drop to one bar, and the alarm goes off, but I have found that the pressure is fine, using a manual gauge, also, if I hit the top of my dash, over the gauge, it will then read fine, for a short while, and then start to act up again. Some times it will work fine for hours. I also have the same problem with the read out on the right side of my dash, the one that shows distance to empty, trip mileage, etc. That also will keep dropping out and give me the DCL light, to say it is not getting any info. I have pulled my dash, to see if I could find any loose connections, but so far have found nothing. Any ideas?
Thank you

Common problem. Replace the cluster with a rebuilt. It is one solution. There is a remote chance that it may be the voltage regulator module on the back of the cluster asembly.

Begin by checking the fuse. If this checks out o.k., then check the Vehicle speed sensor and the wiring/connector. If those check out, then your gauge is bad.

I was recently given a 1990 Lincoln Continental that has a few problems. One of the problems is the digital speedometer. It is not readable by looking straight at it. I have to either sit in the middle of the front seat or slouch down really far in order to read the display. This goes for all the other informatin it displays(temp, oil pressure, etc.). It doesn't seem to be tilted bad. I am also recieving a "check dcl" error message. Could this be the problem? If so, what is it?

I do not know first hand, but a mechanic I know who specializes in Mercurys told me these 90 or 91 thru 94's seem to be prone to this problem, and it is more than likely a burnt out Bulb(s) behind the display. You will have to do some disassembling of the dash atrim around it to slide it out and get it. He also said be carfull becaus some of the digital displays may have halogen bulbs in them that should never be touched by fingers or they burn out or explode.

Does it stay that way? The one on my crown vic does the same thing from time to time. It will usually work again after a restart. The owners manual explains the meaning. "CO or CS indicates a problem that should be seviced."

Good luck and let us know. :)

I have a 1992, and had the same thing happen to me. I takled to Pat Goss, and was told the sending uint was going bad. I replaced it, and have had no more problems. The sending unit is in the gas tank, and part of the fule pump assembly.
Good luck

It will have to be removed from the tank and the potentiometer resistance will have to be tested with an Ohm meter, also you will have to check the float system as well as it may be binding up.

it is an internal issue with the digital dash. have it checked by a shop with a scan tool to verify.

the scan toolcan look for codes and do sweep tests. it is not a code reader, it is a real scan tool.

you do not repair it, you replace it.
